About the Foundation

Committed $35 million to funding since 2004

Since 2017 the The North Candles Foundation has contributed over $1m to promote literacy within Indigenous communities. Most recently, over $340 thousand from our $1 Million Community Response Fund went to support First Nations, Metis, and Inuit families to promote literacy while at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Our students absolutely require reading materials around them. This is so important at this time of much home learning.” – Grade 8/9 Teacher, White Bear Education Complex via Treaty Alliance partnership via Treaty Education Alliance partnership.

“This grant has been a game changer for our school. Students are now engaged in reading, talking about reading, looking for books that interest them, and excited about books that inform us of our world. We are so thankful for the positive impact that this grant has created in our school community. All of our students now see themselves as readers, and really enjoy reading.” – Parkdale School, Literacy Fund Grant recipient

“As a mother of two Black children in a community that has very few Black people, it fills my heart to see the school taking action to bring diverse representation into the classroom through books. Having Indigo as a community partner enabled that to happen.” – Queensbury Elementary School, Community Response Fund recipient
